The Boarding House

A twelve-room inn at Ocean Springs whose dining room seats everyone at one walnut table.

The inn's dining room is one long walnut table, and the table is the design. Guests who have never met pass the grits; the innkeeper says it does more for reviews than the beds do.

Around it: mismatched spindle chairs collected from estate sales across three counties, open shelves of white crockery, a wood stove that runs from November to February, and brass candlesticks down the runner every night whether anyone is booked or not.

It was the smallest budget on this page and it taught me the most - a room this simple has nowhere to hide a wrong decision.
