Bars & lounges
Rooftops punish furniture and flatter photographs. Everything up here was chosen twice - once for the look, once for the wind: cane lounge chairs with cushions that drain, terracotta heavy enough to stay put, festoon lamps rated for salt air.
The bar is concrete topped in walnut, which sounds wrong and weathers right - the top is refinished each spring in an afternoon.
The skyline does the decorating after dusk. Our job was to keep every light on the roof below eye level, so the city reads bright and the bar reads warm.
