The house is 1850s; the previous renovation was 1990s, and it showed. We took the guest rooms back to plaster, pine and shutters, then furnished them with walnut four-posters and writing desks that guests actually use - the front desk mails a letter a day on average.
Every room keeps one oxblood note - a wool blanket at the foot of the bed - so the photography holds together across eighteen rooms that are otherwise deliberately unalike.
Lighting is all lamps. There is not one overhead bulb in a guest room, which is the single cheapest luxury in hospitality.
